INTENT
At St Vincent's Catholic Primary School, our aim is for every child to become a confident, fluent and enthusiastic reader. We believe that learning to read is one of the most important skills a child develops, providing them with the foundations they need to access the wider curriculum and enjoy a lifetime of reading.
Through our use of Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised, we provide a systematic and consistent approach to phonics teaching from the beginning of Reception. We want every child to develop secure phonics knowledge, enabling them to decode unfamiliar words confidently and accurately and to apply their knowledge when reading and writing.
We recognise that children begin their reading journey with different experiences and starting points. Our phonics provision is therefore designed to be inclusive and ambitious for all learners, ensuring that children receive the support, encouragement and challenge they need to succeed.
Alongside developing strong decoding skills, we aim to foster a genuine love of reading. Children are exposed to a rich variety of books and authors and are encouraged to talk about, enjoy and share books. We want our children to see reading not simply as a skill to be mastered, but as a source of pleasure, imagination, knowledge and discovery.
Ultimately, our intention is that every child leaves Key Stage 1 able to read with increasing fluency, accuracy and confidence, with the skills and enthusiasm needed to become a lifelong reader. These strong foundations provide the springboard for the next stage of their reading journey in Key Stage 2, where children can build on their fluency and develop increasingly sophisticated comprehension, vocabulary and critical reading skills. We want every child to enter Key Stage 2 ready to read widely, independently and with confidence, so that reading continues to open doors to learning, imagination and discovery across the curriculum.
