Phonics Impact

IMPACT

We have high expectations for all our pupils, and the impact of our phonics programme is clear across the school. Through consistent teaching, targeted support, and a love of reading at the heart of our curriculum, children make excellent progress in early reading. Our approach aims to ensure that every pupil is equipped with the skills and confidence needed to succeed.

As a result of our systematic approach:

  • Children read accurately, fluently, and with increasing comprehension from an early stage
  • Pupils are well-prepared for the transition from learning to read to reading to learn across the wider curriculum
  • Children develop a love of reading and a positive attitude towards books and storytelling
  • Gaps in learning are identified and addressed quickly through timely assessment and targeted interventions
  • The majority of children meet or exceed age-related expectations in phonics by the end of Year 1

Regular assessments ensure that no child is left behind, and support is swiftly put in place for those who need it.

We measure our impact through:

  • Regular assessments and phonics screening outcomes
  • Pupil voice, which reflects high engagement and enjoyment
  • Monitoring of reading records and progress data
  • Ongoing evaluation by staff and the Phonics Leader to ensure all children thrive

By the end of Key Stage 1, children have built strong foundations in reading and writing, equipping them with the confidence and skills they need for future learning.
